What Is the Sindhupalchok International Trail Race?

The Sindhupalchok International Trail Race (SITR) is a community‑centered trail running event in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal — an area heavily affected by the 2015 earthquake. Founded in 2015, the race has grown into a beloved annual event celebrating endurance, local culture, and community rebuilding. The event is known for its stunning Himalayan trails, engagement with rural villages, and strong spirit of support and charity. Each year, organizers collaborate with local communities to fundraise for causes such as education, water access, and food programs for children.

When and Where

The 10th edition will take place on January 23, 2027, with pre‑race arrangements starting on January 22.

  • 60 km start: Thulo Sirubari
  • 28 km start: Jalbire Village
  • Finish: The Last Resort

Getting There from Kathmandu

Foreign and domestic runners are well looked after. On race day, buses transport participants from Kathmandu to the start villages, and after the race, runners are shuttled from the finish area back to Kathmandu. Organizers provide guidance on pickup points, timing, and luggage, making the journey seamless for international participants.

Race Options

  • 60 km Ultra Trail: challenging, high‑altitude Himalayan terrain for experienced runners
  • 28 km Trail Run: scenic and less demanding, suitable for first-time trail racers

Aid stations are located every 6–10 km, offering water, snacks, fruit, and hot soup, and volunteers are available along the course to assist runners. Cutoffs are in place to maintain safety, but organizers are attentive and supportive, particularly for international participants unfamiliar with the terrain.

Course and Conditions

The trails wind through terraced fields, forests, hills, and traditional villages. The 60 km course includes roughly 4,200 m of elevation gain, while the 28 km route has gentler climbs. Runners are encouraged to download GPX files and offline maps, though volunteers along the route ensure no one gets lost.

Logistics and Fees

  • Race fees: 28 km ~500 NPR, 60 km ~800 NPR
  • Optional bus transport and gear/tent packages available
  • Cash prizes awarded to top finishers in both distances

The race emphasizes safety, guidance, and care for all runners, especially those traveling from abroad. Friendly volunteers accompany international participants from arrival to finish, making the experience smooth and enjoyable.

Why Run It?

  • Experience authentic Nepali culture and Himalayan trails
  • Support local communities through a charity-focused race
  • Be part of a welcoming, well-organized event where runners are guided and cared for from Kathmandu to the finish line
