Tour du Manaslu: The Great Himalayan Route — A Guided Trail Running Adventure
The Tour du Manaslu: The Great Himalayan Route is a fully supported trail-running expedition through one of Nepal’s most breathtaking and remote mountain landscapes. Unlike a competitive race, this experience is designed as a group trail adventure that blends purposeful running with cultural immersion, self-paced exploration, and the unique rhythm of Himalayan life. It is not about racing against the clock, but rather about journeying through incredible terrain alongside fellow runners, soaking in remote scenery, local hospitality, and the challenge of high-mountain trails.
Taking place over 15 days (14 nights) from 14–28 November 2026, this adventure circumnavigates the majestic Manaslu region — home to the world’s eighth-highest peak (8,163 m) — with daily trail running interspersed with acclimatisation, sightseeing, cultural stops, and community engagement. The tour typically includes 12 days of running along varied terrain: subtropical river valleys, lush forests, village paths, rocky mountain trails, and high passes such as the Larkya-La (5,160 m). Participants traverse sections of the world-famous Manaslu circuit, a route celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, traditional villages, and panoramic views.
Unlike a traditional timed race, this experience is supported and guided. A team of experienced guides leads the group, and porters carry the bulk of personal gear so participants can run with a light pack. Meals, accommodation, internal transfers, permits, and logistical support are all included. Accommodation is a mix of comfortable hotels in Kathmandu and local teahouses in the mountains, where shared facilities and simple comforts reflect the authentic Himalayan lifestyle.
On an average day, participants will be on the trails between 2–6 hours, covering distances of roughly 10–20 km, depending on the terrain and pace. This contrasts with race events, where competitors often focus on completing long stages regardless of scenery or cultural context. The tour emphasises enjoyment of the environment and personal experience, with runs interspersed with rest, acclimatisation and storytelling moments that enrich the journey.
The itinerary typically begins in Kathmandu with a prep day, followed by a long drive to the foothills of Manaslu and a series of trail running days that take the group through culturally rich villages and into the alpine zone. There is even a partial rest day to hike toward the Nepal–Tibet border, providing optional acclimatisation and spectacular views. The adventure wraps with a return to Kathmandu, a restful day to explore the city, and a celebratory farewell dinner.
Priced at £2,795 per person, this tour includes full board on the trail, accommodation, transfers, national park fees, guiding and porter support, and many local experiences. Unlike race events, participants are encouraged to run at their own pace, enjoy the community around them, and treat this as a once-in-a-lifetime cultural and athletic adventure rather than a timed athletic competition.
