Everest Sky Race X – Upendra Sunuwar et Ang Furba Sherpa au sommet

The grand return of the ‘Chemins du Ciel’

For its return to the Chemins du Ciel after a ten-year absence, the tenth edition of the Everest Sky Race was won by Nepalese runners Upendra Sunuwar and Ang Furba Sherpa.

At the end of the 175 km (+ 11,000 m), spread over twelve stages (nine timed, three connecting), the runners from the Roof of the World finished ahead of Jérémy and Mahauld Granier from France, and their compatriots Ashok Baram and Chhoki Sherpa.

Two other women made it into the top 10 of this Everest Sky Race: Flavie Bruyneel and Magali Mellon. Lucas Furet and Frédéric Cantin complete the list of runners who were able to finish the ESR, completing the race in just under 34 hours.

An extreme race in the heart of the Himalayas

Although Gome Bahadur Gurung (Base Camp Trek & Expedition), the race director, had to modify the route due to deteriorating weather conditions linked to Cyclone Montha, all 40 participants were able to finish the race.

Heavy snowfall, strong winds and low temperatures forced the organisers to leave the Chemins du Ciel at over 5,000 metres, two-thirds of the way through the race, in order to ensure the safety of the peloton. The last three stages took place in the rain, between 3,000 and 4,000 metres.

At the end of the competition, ten runners continued their Himalayan adventure towards Mera Peak in mountaineering mode… Eight of them reached one of the summits (6,435 m) in conditions.
