Overview
The 4th edition of the Capital to Country Multi Day Ultra is a challenging and immersive five-day, self-sufficient trail stage race set in the rugged hills and rural landscapes east of Kathmandu, Nepal. Covering approximately 197 km (around 123 miles), the event offers a rare blend of demanding mountain running and deep cultural immersion, taking runners through remote villages, forested ridgelines, jeep tracks, and traditional trails rarely seen by visitors.
The race begins near the Kathmandu Valley, including a ceremonial start at the iconic Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), before heading steadily into quieter, more rural terrain. Designed for experienced trail and ultra runners, the event combines physical challenge with meaningful interaction with local communities, making it as much a journey as a race.
Route & Daily Stages
The course is divided into five stages, each with its own character and challenges. While exact routes may vary slightly year to year, the overall structure and difficulty remain consistent.
Approximate stage breakdown:
- Stage 1: Sankhu to Kasibanjayang – ~43 km
- Stage 2: Kasibanjayang to Bhakundebesi – ~40 km
- Stage 3: Bhakundebesi to Mukpatar – ~43 km
- Stage 4: Mukpatar to Lama Home – ~38 km
- Stage 5: Lama Trail Marathon – ~43 km
Total distance: ~197 km
Total elevation change: approximately 10,000 m of ascent and descent
Runners can expect steep climbs, long runnable sections, technical descents, and frequent changes in terrain. Daily elevation gain is significant, demanding strong climbing fitness and careful pacing.
Challenge & Format
The race is primarily self-sufficient, meaning runners carry their own food, mandatory equipment, and personal supplies. A lighter-load option is available, where organisers transport food and sleeping equipment between stages.
Accommodation during the race is provided in pre-arranged campsites and village bunkhouses, allowing participants to experience rural Nepal firsthand. One highlight of the event is a traditional monk blessing before the final stage.
This event is best suited to runners with:
- Prior ultra-distance or stage-race experience
- Comfort running long distances on mountainous terrain
- Experience managing kit, nutrition, and recovery over multiple days
