Embark on an adventurous journey along part of the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) with the Wild Kanchenjunga to Makalu Skydance, exploring remote and wild regions of the Nepal Himalaya. Led by elite athlete Lizzy Hawker, this expedition promises a unique blend of physical challenge, cultural immersion, and breathtaking landscapes.

Introduction: Starting in the far east of Nepal, the trek takes participants through lush rainforests and traditional Rai villages, progressing north into alpine forests, towering summits, and Tibetan settlements. The route culminates at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, offering awe-inspiring views of the world’s third-highest mountain. The journey includes traversing remote passes, exploring Tibetan villages like Ghunsa and Yangma, and descending to the Tibetan-influenced Olanchungola. The adventure continues over the challenging Lumbha Sambha pass, reaching the Tibetan village of Thudam before transitioning into the Barun valley below Makalu.

Skydance: The trip is categorized as a “Skydance,” a unique blend between a race and a traditional trek. Participants, as a small group undertaking a supported “fastpack,” carry personal gear with support for wild camps. The itinerary allows flexibility in daily distances, providing the freedom to explore within the overall goal of reaching the destination. Coined by Lizzy Hawker during her original GHT attempt in 2011, the term “Skydance” emphasizes a fast and light approach through the highest mountains with minimal support.

Participants: Ideal participants are mountain enthusiasts seeking a beautiful and challenging experience. Whether runners, hikers, or mountaineers, participants should possess an adventurous spirit, a sense of humor, and a willingness to be challenged both physically and mentally. The journey offers a unique opportunity to witness the ‘real Nepal’ off the beaten track, immersing in the culture of remote communities.

Trip Information:

  • Dates and Cost: The basic trip runs from October 18 to November 1, with an optional Makalu extension until November 11.
